How does a nitrogen generator work?

The working principle of nitrogen generator is mainly based on pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology, which is an efficient, reliable and cost-effective method of gas separation. In nitrogen generators, the core component is the adsorbent, usually carbon molecular sieve (CMS), which has different affinities for oxygen and nitrogen.

When compressed air enters the nitrogen generator, it first passes through a filter to remove impurities such as moisture, oil and dust, ensuring that the gas entering the adsorption tower is clean. Subsequently, the clean air enters the adsorption tower equipped with carbon molecular sieve. Here, oxygen molecules are adsorbed on the surface due to their strong affinity with the carbon molecular sieve, while nitrogen molecules pass through due to their weaker affinity, thus achieving oxygen and nitrogen separation.

Nitrogen generators usually contain two or more adsorption towers, which alternately perform adsorption and regeneration processes. When one adsorption tower is adsorbing, the other adsorption tower is regenerating. During the regeneration process, the adsorbed oxygen molecules are desorbed from the surface of the carbon molecular sieve by reducing the pressure in the adsorption tower and then discharged from the system through the drain valve. In this way, the adsorption tower can regain its adsorption capacity and prepare for the next round of adsorption process.

During the whole process, the nitrogen generator achieves continuous production of nitrogen by precisely controlling the opening and closing of each valve and the pressure change of the adsorption tower. In addition, the nitrogen generator is also equipped with a purity detection device to monitor the purity of nitrogen in real time and adjust the operating parameters as needed to ensure that the purity of nitrogen meets the use requirements.

The nitrogen generator uses pressure swing adsorption technology and the different affinities of carbon molecular sieves for oxygen and nitrogen to achieve oxygen and nitrogen separation, thereby efficiently producing high-purity nitrogen.
